How are some of you guys in that area preparing this? It really sounds scary. I read that canned goods, water and gasoline are now in short supply.

What will be interesting is trying to open cans with an electric can opener...when the power is. Luckily I have a well used P38 with my keys.

I'll never understand why people leave it to the last moment
to prepare for an emergency. Like time and tide, emergencies
wait for no man. They can hit in some form when you least
expect it, so best to be ready just in case.
These folks who rush to the store for food and batteries an hour
before the hurricane hits were obviously not boy scouts in their youth.Comment

They were ordered to evacuate, but we're recalled. Basic Trainees will be graduating, but their ceremony recorded. No civilians on the base, according to what the news release said."The first gun that was fired at Fort Sumter sounded the death-knell of slavery. They who fired it were the greatest practical abolitionists this nation has produced." ~BG D. UllmanComment

I live in the heart of hurricane country. I could talk all night about what it is like. When I worked at the refinery (where evacuation was impossible) one of my co-workers said his brother from Texas had hurricane experience and knew how to help him. He brought him 100 gallons of gasoline in cans, $300 in small bills, batteries and various non-perishable foods. He simply wrote him a check. What's important about this is the gas stations limit what they will sell, have long lines and run out a week or better before the storm hits. Though we worked at a refinery and yes they offered to give us gas, they just weren't organized enough to follow through. After the storm stores can not sell anything using a CC with no power/phone so only cash is accepted and the food part is self explanatory along with the store selves becoming bare days before the storm. What I discovered about WalMart is that even with generator back up they can not sell anything with the power and phone lines out of service. They won't even accept cash. It has something to do with the cash registers not being able to track the store inventory. I still don't understand why they bother to open during such circumstances.
The good thing about this current storm heading toward the Carolina's is that it is weakening. It is now a category 3 vs the original cat 4. Big difference. It isn't the wind speed so much as the strength, size of the seas it is pushing, rainfall and number of tornados that it will spur off.
Just a few days ago we dodged Hurricane Gordon. It was strong at one time but weakened before hitting the Biloxi area at a cat 1 storm. Only one person killed from this storm--it could have been much worse.Last edited by Allen; 09-12-2018, 06:46.Comment

Sam, surely you jest. I live about 80 miles from Charleston, SC and have been through quite a few hurricanes . We aren't all red necks and party when one comes through our state. My wife and I started preparing a week ago. We have a plan set up and have non perishable foods stashed. Water it not a problem in my town. I'm 80 years old in great health and have never been without water supplied by City Utilities. If you have a well and pump system you better fill the bath tub for commode use and plenty of drinking water. Plenty of flashlights, car full of gas (3 days ago) extra 10 gallons , propane for outside cooking if needed , car charger for cell phones, all meds checked etc etc.... It just a matter of common sense. If it gets too rough I can leave and hit Interstate 26 ( all lanes reversed) in 15 minutes and head north.Don't worry, the government will take care of you.

P.S burglar alarm operates for 48 hours on battery back up but I added an additional battery and it will go for about 5days''

Actually a good point. North Carolina, since about 2012, has passed laws to encourage development along coastal lands that are prone to flooding and/or damage from storm surge, on the logic that it is good for business. That only happens if people have expectations about getting bailed out after a disaster.Last edited by togor; 09-13-2018, 04:27.Comment

We have something brewing in the Gulf. Instead of running out to the stores I sat down and ordered from Amazon for some odd's and ends. Delivered in two days. We have a few weeks supply of dry and canned goods also. What I just found interesting is a guy on an old USCG Light tower riding out the storm. To Error Is Human To Forgive Is Not SAC PolicyComment

This is my point from someone who has survived many weather related situations, including a 3 foot flood that drove my family from our home. To depend on other's can be foolish and not a wise idea. We are preparing for just about anything that the future holds for our area. Our home is out of a flood area, have a generator with fuel for a limited time. Have our propane tank full, now stockpiling wood for our two wood stoves. Our new addition is already providing a limited amount of vegetables and will only increase as we plant in our new indoor plant beds. The Solexx covering provides a fantastic amount of diffused lighting as well as sun warmed air, the ability to gather water and purify the water for us and our animal's use. Aladdin Lamps with gallon's of kerosene so we try and cover things for our area having been without before. It is nice to live along a waterfront area until the water encroaches to your home, I lived half a mile from a creek and got nailed hard! I feel sorry for anyone in the path of this storm, but life is what is dealt us.Actually a good point. Is there another definition of dredge that I'm unaware of? I mean, if the storm dredges an entire state...what's left besides a big muddy hole?Monster Storm To Dredge The Carolinas
