Another liberal arrow hits the wrong target ...

I think it's called shooting from the hip or maybe
it's the shotgun approach, but whatever metafor
is used, it's a typical democrat ploy -
shoot first, on page one and check facts later. Admit
you were wrong on page 10, usually much later.

An old lady gave awards to hockey players. I'm not getting the connection.

During the Seven Years War (which we call the French and Indian War) the British had a garrison on the island of Minorca in the Mediterranean. A French fleet landed a force on the island and the British were besieged. The British sent out a relief fleet under Sir John Byng.

In those days the British Navy had a set of regulations called “Fighting Instructions.” Admiral Byng tried to bring the French to battle in accordance with those regulations and they wouldn’t cooperate. Finally, out of food and water and his ships needing repairs, he sailed away. The British garrison on Minorca surrendered.

At his court martial, Byng was asked why he hadn’t tried various methods to smoke the French out, and to each suggestion he pointed out that wasn’t covered in “Fighting Instructions.” He was found guilty and shot by a firing squad.

The Byng Award was created in his honor. It is given for the tenacious defense of absolute bullxxxx in the face of overwhelming common sense.

Interesting story, Vern. Sort of runs counter to your recent argument about the Justice Department needing to reduce prosecutorial discretion when it comes handling cases, but I doubt anyone besides me noticed. Had Byng felt empowered to think outside the box, he might have better prosecuted his war against the French.

Though not related here, I coined one too. It's called Berndt's Fallacy, and it holds that when confronted by a set of difficult alternatives, inaction is the safest course. It comes from real-life experience, and I suspect Berndt would deem it unfair, but I was there.

There is also Graminski's Law of Ornathoptics which states "The amount of "flap" created by a person, situation, or statement is inversely proportional to its importance."

Of course, it presumes one knows what an ornithopter is.
