Putin demonstrates new Kalashnikov rifle ...

Left handed bolt seems peculiar unless most Russians are lefties.

I wondered how they could improve the AK until I saw the pic.

I don't think that's an AK. It's difficult to tell but it appears the gas system is not on top of the barrel. The shots he made were at 300 meters, and the hits were all on the edges of the target.

No, right, it's not an AK but designed by Kalashnikov.
You can't improve an AK, at least, not in my opinion.

Well, depends on what you're looking for. I've used the M2 carbine, the M1 rifle, the M16 (early version), the M14 (pre M21 sniper rifle) and the AK 47. The one thing the AK has going for it is, it works. Wet, dry, clogged with mud, covered with rust, it works.

          And that's what's I'd want in a battle rifle - never fail.
How do you improve on that ?
Not an AK but just as rugged, my SKS has never jammed unlike my Mini 14.

The M1 and M14 were just as reliable. The M16 is pretty reliable -- IF you take care of it.

Looks like the ejection port is on the right side, so you load and clear it while keeping the shooting hand on the grip. I have a couple of 22s so configured. Encourages ambidexterity which is a good thing, IMHO.

From bolt back to grip can't take more than a second.
If your right handed, working anything with your left is kinda awkward.
                Seems a weird configuration
