Thanks to 8 years of Obama. Check it out:

Nearly half of the residents in the nation’s five biggest cities do not speak English at home, choosing instead their native language, according to the

We spoke German in the house back in the late 50's and early 60's. I never knew it was Obama's fault!

If you can believe it, the USA is so great we can know more than one language and still function.

This is a load of Horse Sh1t.... Obama to blame my ass

My father grew up in northern New England and attended a French speaking school straight through High School ... his sisters kid... my U.S. born cousin born of U.S. born parents was held back in 1st grade as he had virtually no english language skills .....

.... the present Governor of Maine, Paul Lepage.... born in Lewiston Maine was denied his first attempt at college enrollment due to... wait for it...... poor English language skills ...

Sorry lads... Obama had nothing to do with any of the above ...

My grandparents came over from Sweden in the late 1890's. Swedish was spoken at home and all their kids did too tho born in the U.S. But, they had good English skills to get along in public, with an accent of course.

If you live in a foreign country and don't speak English in your home that's fine and to be expected. If you live here and don't speak English you aren't at home.

Huh? Allen, please reread that? I think you may want to rephrase it...or at least elaborate a bit.

That's pretty much what I meant to say. While it is a persons own business what they do in their homes this article reflects a direct number of illegals we have in our country. By speaking their languages at home it shows they aren't letting loose of their heritage, beliefs and ways of life as should be required to enter here legally. That's one reason there are so many crimes committed here by illegals.

As I've said many times before, probably 1/3 to 1/2 the people here are not citizens by the time you count the illegals, the ones on visas, green cards, visitors, foreign students and etc. There's 67 million right there.

If you live here and don't speak our language you are not at home as you have undoubtedly moved here from somewhere else.

That saddens me to hear you say that. I'm proud of my own heritage same as my friends and neighbors are proud of theirs. As far as languages go, I insist that my grandkids be raised bilingual. Able to think and speak in more than one language without having to mentally translate.
I enjoy the sharing and sampling of other cultures. Even the jokes can be funny among friends.

"Watch out. Here comes that Colombian again and he's selling neck ties!"
The list goes on and on.

Life would be pretty boring without all the Greek and Italian eateries. Oktoberfest wouldn't be much fun and neither would Cinco de Mayo. Heck, just last month I visited Turks and a couple days later we sat down in a kosher deli. Ive been to two Palestinian family parties recently. At every single one of the above mentioned someone was speaking in their old native tongue. It's all part of the atmosphere and very American as far as I'm concerned.

Well said JB, but Allen comes from a place that didn't see these waves of immigration in the 19th century, so he's never seen it work out for the good, and he can't bring himself to imagine it. Not that he means to, but nonetheless in many respects he embodies the things that modern Southerners don't even like about themselves.

People emoting about families not speaking English at home have forgotten their history - and haven't been to little Italy in Boston (fantastic food), the many Chinatowns, etc.

The waves of legal immigrants over the last two centuries have traditionally spoken their original language for a generation or two. their children are assimilated into the Great American Melting Pot - and speak English.

Unfortunately, our history also includes a tradition of belittling and despising the latest wave of legal immigrants. Yet sooner or later these legal immigrants and their children and their heritage are celebrated as part of America.

Legal immigrant Spanish speakers should be welcomed into the United States.

Illegal immigrants of any ethnicity should be shot as the criminals they are.
