You're right about that. Not easy to know which way to aim the knee-jerk, right?

It's a surprising ruling IMO which may be a consequence of the 4-4 split.

It's the right decision because if political "speech" (unlimited campaign spending) is to be protected under the first amendment, then we, the audience, ought to know who the speaker is--that is, the source of the money.

Normally the Roberts court bends over backwards for the well-heeled. But at 4-4 the lower court ruling stands and maybe they didn't want that part getting out.

It will be fine. Some folks will find it cramps their style. So what? Whether they are far left nut jobs or far right Conservatives, they are all alike ... about like roaches in a kitchen ... run for cover when the light is turned on. Let the light shine. Let donors be identified. If demokrats object to rich Conservatives giving money to elect Republicans, fine. If Conservatives object to rich Chinese and other such interested parties giving money to elect democrats, fine. Turn the lights on. Let the roaches run. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

It's a two way street. Rest assured the socialists would like to know where the conservative funds are coming from. I think they're getting suspicious that money is being channeled by more than the NRA.

This area of law, the protections afforded to anonymous speech, is one that is probably going to see some action in the years to come. Interesting to think that there is a common thread between convicted sex offenders, who don't want to have to report their online handles (facebook, gmail, jouster2, etc.) to the publicly available registry, and rich donors who want to bankroll political messaging campaigns but not have their name associated with it in any way, shape or form. Not too far off the court will eventually have to consider the question of whether machine-originated (artifical intelligence) speech is protected by the First Amendment or not.

Bruce if you could change that state of affairs with the courts and the law, would you? If so, how?
