Americans Losing Interest In The Civil War

I think Roadkingtrax was right when he said most Americans don't have a personal ancestral connection to the civil war.Most are products of the great post civil war immigrations.

Nonsense--I have no "personal ancestral connection," but have been avidly interested since childhood; all that's required is a love of history AND (what is most lacking in our degraded polyglot population) the intelligence to pursue that interest.

Perhaps if the real history and causes were taught there would be more interest. All that is spoke of in school is that it was fought over slavery (which couldn't be further from the truth) and how only blacks were slaves and that everyone who didn't fight the South were racist.

I live in what was once the cradle of Civil War history. There are many forts in my area. Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines, and 3 or 4 within 30 miles in Pensacola. Two of which are on the Pensacola Naval base. There are forts in the other direction as well in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Those of us who were born and raised here appreciate what we have here and the history behind all of it. Unfortunately 99% of the population here now came from other places and could care less about the past. They move here for the beaches, jobs, climate and so forth. When their houses are foreclosed they merely move somewhere else.

Considering the American Civil War is a footnote in world history, and also pre-1898, it's going to require a measure personal curiosity that's not the responsibility of a school. That's where family connections and local history can provide a big inspiration. If you're not a history buff, nothing will motivate you to care either way.

Granted, it has been 56 yrs since high school, but one thing thad I discovered quickly as a transplanted Okie to Mississippi was that the civil war was just under the surface. It was easy to get into an argument about North and South.

Adults, after 3 or 4 beers, could become belacose over the tactics and generalship of a war that ended 100 yrs ealier. Mmmm, kinda like the political forum here.

I can only hope the children of that generation (mine) have grown up to be more objective and dispassionate.

Which strictly speaking from what I've read about it was a whole lot more than the one issue. But it would seem the fit the left wing agenda to portray the Federals as abolitionist crusaders and the South and redneck racists.

You're absolutely right. Have you visited any Civil War National Parks lately? They're all alike, all with the same message.
