Works like this; (and ONLY if you have a corrupted press)
(1) You make up a smear.
(2) The press reports it verbatim
(3) You then vocally use the press's reports as 'evidence' that your smear is genuine.

This has already been accomplished by many, many statements from the press stating "Kavanaugh is a predator/rapist"
(A lie repeated often enough will eventually be accepted as the truth)

Kinda like what the FBI did to get the FISA warrants;
(1) Strozk fabricated a 'story'
(2) He illegally leaked the fabricated story to the press
(3) Press reported it
(4) FBI then used the press's reports as 'proof' that it was genuine when submitting it to the FISA court.
