Those who oppose involuntary commitment of people who refuse to live by society's rules and show consideration for others should be made responsible for those people's misbehavior. How about an adopt a mental patient program ?

And those who support such a practice should be incarcerated in the same cell with those they would lock up.

You are pushing the Fallacy of Limited Alternatives. We don't have just two choices of action, we have many. There are plenty of things we can do without locking people up -- like outpatient treatment, for example. Or giving them all free tickets to San Francisco.

Off topic Vernon, but I like that phrase, "Fallacy of Limited Alternatives". What jumps out at me is how it butts up against the recently-discussed idea of "Choosing the Lesser Evil", in the sense that a non-evil alternative may yet be found if one but looks. Anyhow, back to the topic at hand.

The only time a Third Party has ever won in the United States was in the Election of 1860. And that destroyed the party from which the Republicans were born (the Whigs) and touched off a Civil War. No one who understands the Constitution of the United States can support throwing votes away to Third Parties.

So the idea is that sometimes the Fallacy isn't? I do know people who take the approach that they'll split their ticket, so that one party doesn't have complete control. Most here wouldn't agree with that but it gets at the idea that alternatives exist. Anyhow, back to the disposition of people who can't manage their own affairs sufficiently to keep from shooting up and crapping in the streets.

The effectiveness of outpatient treatment is "greatly exaggerated"-"he stopped taking his meds!"
Political parties are not required or defined in the Constitution, nor are they fixed in stone. They rise, they fall, they change, new ones are formed, either around a personality or clearly defined interests, ideological, regional, etc. The 1948 Election was like 1860 a four way race-Democrats, Republicans, Dixiecrats, Progressives. Remember the Anderson Alternative of 1980 ? The Whig Party became a "house divided", the Federalists were discredited by their opposition to the War of 1812.

                .
The effectiveness of incarcerating people for life is also "greatly exaggerated" -- people who have committed no crime at all.

How many innocent people are you willing to lock up?

Lovely...let the drug addicts and schizophrenics wander the streets in complete freedom, so long as it's not in your backyard, while you snicker about the piles of crap they leave in the places they do go. And you want to set the rules of this forum? No thanks.
