The more people there are, the worse the Hurricane ...

If there were no people there the hurricane would cause no damage,
but people have been moving into these prone areas because the
government is there to help. This is particularly true of the East Coast,
but also Florida where people go to retire and enjoy the good climate.
So, the hurricanes don't necessarily get stronger but appear to because
there's a lot more stuff to blow away, flood and flatten.

Perfectly true -- I saw a map of the Houston area after the hurricane there, comparing the city at the time of the hurricane with the city about 25 years earlier. We had damage not because it was a bad, energetic storm, but because people built thousands of homes in the flood plain.

Stupid thread .... hell... if you guys in Califonia had fewer people you'd have less human feces on your side walks ... which you seem proud to boast about by the way.

It's not just people it's the number and condition of the buildings. Down here in the South we have been wiped off the map so many times by category 4 and 5+ hurricanes that most of our structures are fairly new and built to the latest codes.

In comparison, hurricane Sandy that hit the NJ coast was a very minimal hurricane but did a lot of structural damage due to the fact that hurricanes don't hit that area. From what I saw most of the structures and amusement park was very old and probably rickety.

Getting back to people. Folks that live near the shorelines have money and they have insurance. Buildings closest to the water are sometimes hit by title surges 20-30' high and backed with 150mph+ winds. This wall of water will destroy most anything.

Those who act helpless after a storm are usually people like illegals and people who shouldn't be legal that come into the area to scam the old folks and work cleanup jobs off the books. These people live out of their cars and are present for every type government handout there is.

Katrina comes to mind. All you heard about was New Orleans over and over. The title surge hit LA, MS, AL and FL. NO was on the good side of the hurricane. Looking at the pictures and videos you can see they still had trees and the trees had leaves on them. They got some wind but mostly they got the rain and flooding. Mississippi got the very worse of Katrina. Some areas like Ocean Springs and Waveland all but disappeared but this is probably news to everyone because all you heard about was the whinning from the welfare recipients of NO, many of which were housed at tax payer expense in motels in AL and FL. Needless to say they did NOT want to go back and didn't till the federal money was cut off. Alabama also got hit hard by this storm. I recently posted pictures of the leaning USS Battleship Alabama. A lot of buildings in Mobile way up into Mobile bay were completely leveled but... no whinning.

I personally think no one who builds within say 1000' of the oceans should be insurable at any cost because even though they do pay more after these strong storms the cost is eventually spread out to everyone. Also the views could be used by everyone instead of having homes or condo's blocking everything.

It looks like the 1780 season was the worse on record

                .
                - Over 28,000 deaths
                - 4 Cat3+ hurricanes (2 may have been Cat 5)
                - 8 Hurricanes total

                1780 ?...Wait.....but......but....but

You can ask him yourself. He changed his name to Bernie Sanders after hearing backlash that Bill Clinton was a adescendant of his.

I guess you've heard the news but it is more announced down here. Hurricane Michael did 8 billion in damage so far, caused 13 deaths, leveled enough structures to compare with a nuke and did a lot of damage to Tyndall AFB near Panama City.

Imagine riding out a storm in one of the vessels of those days....even a warship of the line. Got to believe in a God because the chances of meeting him soon are extraordinarily high.
