Statistics show children who grow up in single parent households are more likely to drop out of school, take drugs and commit crimes (Please don't submit anecdotal evidence -- we're talking about the rule, not the exception.) Children born out of wedlock start out with one strike against them.

Those anti-abortion folks only care about kids until they're born. Ignorance can be fixed. Get out and look around. Go see just exactly what is being done to help women in need with dependent children. Yesterday I helped some men unload over a ton of food which our church uses to support families struggling with poverty, food insecurity. Many of the folks that come are single mothers. The children were thankfully not killed merely b/c they were guilty of getting in the way of someone else's convenience. Thankfully these children and their mothers are not alone. Last month my church feed 171 families ... not just a bag of food but boxes of food sufficient to feed a family for at least a week. I've not seen any of the pro-abortion crowd doing doodle squat to help any of these mothers and their children. Sincerely. bruce.

you have to have a license to do just about anything in this country, except any old dumbass can have as many kids as they want, or dont want. think about that. it has little to do with being "educated", what religion they are etc. it is mostly in how they are raised, and its just not from single parent households, plenty of aholes(men, and women) that grew up with both parents run around breeding without much concern about it.

Good points, leftyo. I'll add that it's not illegal to get pregnant or get someone pregnant while out of wedlock, and throwing people in jail for it would be counter-productive. Access to birth control, morning-after pills, and maybe even abortions on the early side are important if society wants to knock down the number of kids who grow up in half-assed situations. We could try to be like Sweden when it comes to running a society with low marriage rates among parents but that would mean high taxes and big swaths of our country couldn't act like Swedes if they tried really hard.

To end, or at least impose limits on that cycle was the objective of the Eugenics movement. But when some of the principals of eugenics began to be put into effect in certain states, such as by sterilizing the feeble-minded, liberals claimed that the feeble-minded had a RIGHT to reproduce themselves! Not only did they have that "right," but liberals also claim the rest of the population had a legal DUTY to support them financially, if necessary, by tax-funded welfare programs. Better yet for liberals, by giving social parasites the right to vote (not to mention such incentives as hauling them to polls in chartered buses!), those votes are obviously guaranteed for the party that's dishing out the welfare benefits. What a brilliant system for achieving political power!

Ahhhh . . the fact that the mother has no idea who the father is just means she can't marry him. It DOESN'T mean the child wouldn't benefit by being raised in a two-parent family.

That decision was based on junk science -- something Holmes was prone to do. He favored eugenics -- which became an official Nazi policy in Germany.

Eugenics is the ultimate form of racism, because it's underlying foundation is that there is a superior breed of man. People who don't match that breed (in Germany it was the "Nordic Type" -- blonde hair and blue eyes) are automatically inferior. Superior people are encouraged to breed, inferior people are prevented from breeding.

Interesting. 40%. Thats about the same as during the colonial period. Not a new issue. Surprise, surprise Gomer sometimes men and women have sex and they aren't married. Sometimes that results in a child and the daddy disappears for one reason or another.
So to me the REAL problem is we now have yet ANOTHER excuse to blame the problems of society - the job market, cost of health care, cost of day care, etc. on. Now we get to blame the fatherless child.
Marriage will fix it all? Seriously? Divorce rates are through the roof.
