Beer sales plummeting and the cause will surprise you

Millennials are losing interest in drinking beer because they would rather use marijuana. That's right. Marijuana has now been legalized in 29 states either for recreational or medicinal use. So many younger people would rather just sit home and smoke pot rather than go out and have a few beers with their friends.

This is not funny. The implications are ominous. If marijuana itself isn't bad enough it is also a gateway drug that will lead to use of even more harmful substances. This raises the possibility of large numbers of our population becoming drug addicted zombies who cannot think for themselves or even care for themselves. Of course they will always vote Democrat because they encourage this.

Sid, remember the good old days of dealing with pure psychotics instead of drug induced zombies.

Large numbers of our population are already Zombies.
They might not drink beer but they have smart phones and drugs.

Only if they can drag themselves away from their smart phone for a minute or two.

Legalizing recreational marijuana was a deliberate tack for turning this state from red to blue. It is not working as well as intended but it has certainly had an effect.

The communist wackjob who will likely be our next gov'nuh is a perfect example of the tactic at work.

Out of curiosity I looked up the Canadian statistics and they are slightly different. In 2017 beer sales went up 0.7%; wine went up 3.1% and hard liquor went up 3.2%. This is consistent with articles that I have read that there is a resurgence of interest in cocktails and the like while the aging population is developing a taste for good wines. Having said that, it will be interesting to see if this week's national legalization of marijuana will have any effect on alcohol sales. I suspect that the effect will not be significant. Based on the photos in the newsmedia of the line-ups at the legal marijuana dispensaries I think that most of the purchasers are probably potheads who wouldn't know a good beer from witch's brew

Talked to a guy I know in the business a couple days ago,

                  overall the business if flat,
                  BMC's are flat or negative

all the growth is in FMB's and Micros,

imports are holding their own as a group, but certian brands (Heineken for one) is down in this area

we are not a weed OK state, so that has no bearing,

not sure if Wine or Likker is up or down,
