    Up The River

Visited Inverness a couple of days ago....In the Station Square, there is a monument to the 79th Queens Own Cameron Highlanders.....The List contains the soldiers lost in the Sudan and Egypt in the 1880's.....There is a separate list of those lost Up the River.... One tablet is 3/4 lost KIA and died of wounds....There is about 18 soldiers lost because of disease...One is a boy drummer....regards...alex

The Soudan almost conquered Egypt in those days -- only the British stopped it.

A young Churchill in the 21st Lancers, with a Broomhandle Mauser because of a shoulder injury.

They often used those young boys to pace out and mark shooting distances
before an attack (Zulu Dawn). If the attack came before the lads were
finished, the poor kids would get killed by one side or the other.
