My son got suckered into putting on blackface by some sneaky girls as a HS freshman for a dumb homecoming skit. He was given the role of a local kid who enrolled in the neighboring district so it was a kid pissing match rivalry between some girls and these two boys, one black and one white and these girls got the bright idea to make a skit about a game show with these two kids as contestants and my son playing the black kid. 10 times more dumb than mean I was told by people who saw it.

Well the SHTF and kids and parents got called in and this boy's stepdad was calling everyone racists who raised their kids wrong while the administators squirmed and wrung their hands. I had enough of that so I told the guy that my kid was raised right and when he screwed up he owned it. So my boy stood up first and apologized to the guy and the school, etc., then other kids and involved parents did. This guy, getting his pound of flesh, got up and left the meeting, but pumped his fist and said "white power!" on his way out the door, which wasn't really necessary. Someone might say my kid didn't do much of anything wrong and there's truth to that but dammit this meeting was going nowhere fast so someone had to do something. He received no discipline from the school nor should he have, and if they tried I would have ripped them a new one.

About a week later I called a buddy of mine who knew the guy and asked him to pass along a message, specifically that I understood his beef, but that apologies had been made, and as far as I was concerned, he and I were good, no more problems. Message came back that this was agreed. Blackface torques African-Americans off because it harkens back to some bad days for them. That's just the way it is and I'm not gonna argue with them about it.
