I was, until this year, a County Election Commissioner.

Voting machines are a boondoggle, pure and simple. Here in little Stone County, Arkansas, we need to replace our old machines. The replacement will cost $350,000 -- not counting maintenance, programming, etc. And remember, there are over 3,000 counties in the country -- all of whom will need these new machines.

And as you pointed out, the only things the machines do is increase the complexity of the system and provide more opportunities for breakdowns. And they don't do a damn' thing you can't do with a paper ballot and a #2 pencil.

To Vernon's great horror I think he's onto something. Prediction here is that if Georgia governor race is close then it's close with the guy who runs the elections on top. And no paper trail.
