      Actually, they don't eat human flesh for nutrition, they eat it for shamanistic reasons, eating a bit of the brain of deceased relatives.

                Perhaps in modern times this is so, but before the modern era of food production, humans were a valuable source of protein on the island, with the traditional food crops being generally protein-deficient and the inland regions being inaccessible for food commerce due to the impossible terrain.
