You're right. Pointless to try convincing people who don't speak the same language.

Unless one has something of value to lose, how does one know when they have won?

Another example of recording devices hitting the "Stupid" button in someone's psyches.
The last war where there any real rules was the Spanish-American War. After the failed attempt to block Santiago Harbor with the collier USS Merrimac the Chief of Staff to Admiral Cervera came out under a flag of truce to inform our side that all of the crew had been rescued and were safe. During the Naval Battle of Santiago on July 3 when the Spanish cruiser Vizcaya cruiser started to burn Captain J. W.Philip of the USS Texas told his crew:
"Don't cheer, boys, those poor devils are dying."
I suspect a lot of troops today are carefully coached on what they say to a reporter with a recording device going as opposed to what they say among themselves.

In the Battle off Samar, when the last of the American tin cans was sunk and the American survivors were in the water, the Japanese steamed past, manned the rails and saluted.
