Romaine or cos lettuce is a variety of lettuce that grows in a tall head of sturdy dark green leaves with firm ribs down their centers. Unlike most lettuces, it is tolerant of heat. In North America, romaine is sold as whole heads or as “hearts” that have had the outer leaves removed and are often packaged together.

Even Breitbart missed stating the whole truth. The US didn't ban Romaine as law. The CDC ordered it stopped due to yet another E-coli breakout linked to it.
Comparing a food and health problem with firearms is ludicrous though.

Yep what JB said, family friend got some before word was out. He looked like warmed over death a week ago. Been to 3 or 4 doctors. Heard today he is finally showing some improvement.

The local dems would love to see the CDC intervene against firearms. Regards, Clark

Maybe we should get someone else to pick the lettuce.

Why is romaine lettuce more dangerous than a head of lettuce? Is it the ferilizer they use? Do the illegal pickers poop in the fields?

                it is not,

likely the fertilizer used, or water in the wash and rinse stage of picking,

Might be in the nature of the plant. As was mentioned it's grown to the ground, but it isn't grown in a head which is washed then shucked then rinsed again. Romaine needs to be thoroughly cleaned as a matter of prevention which is time consuming and too costly.
Natural organic fertilizers (Read as animal $hit) carry a different strain of E-coli than our bodies are accustomed to. Whether it's fertilizer or lettuce pickers crapping in the field and not washing, odds are greater that something's crap is going into your dinner.
This comes up every time there is a "Romaine scare". Not counting previous occurrences, it's probably the third time this year alone that some business unknowingly purchased a batch of "dirty" lettuce. If memory serves, I think the Chipotle chain got caught up in a major way just a few years ago? It hasn't stopped. Only not as widely reported anymore.
If someone hadn't tried to use it as an analogy to promote their crusading ulterior agenda, most of us might not have heard about it.
