    Any other teetotalers here ?

The discussion about being en thrall to ethanol and whether or not The Man condemned it prompts me to ask this.
Been one all my life, I think any taste for alcohol was bred out of me. One bit of family lore I got was my mother's great-grandmother was a drunk, ruined her daughter's life, my mother said her family embraced Christian Science which an abstinence church. Wasn't exposed to it in my youth, got to be an adult-or of legal age if you prefer-found out I didn't like it anyway.

Not here but not the boss of me either. 30+ years marriage and we have the half-full bottles of booze left over from the wedding. Kessler's tastes worse than fuel oil! No clue how my father-in-law could prefer it.

As I heard on a show once. Hard to trust a man, who can't trust himself with a beer. Include whiskey, or anything else.

I have not drank for long periods when I was younger and training for lifting competitions. Those days are long gone. I like bourbon and will have a little with supper sometimes. Very rare I have a second unless we are celebrating something.

beer snob, bourbon snob, wine snob, and if my income would allow it, I would also be a Scotch snob,

after many years in the grocery business (management) I was fortunate to learn how to taste wine, and have a decent palate,

after years of drinking Budweiser, I jumped to imports then micros and have a great appreciation for good beer,

bourbon, was my Dad's drink and I appreciate a small glass on occasion,,

key is, moderation with all, I have learned how much I can drink w\o getting the hangover or getting stupid, (moderation)

I don't fault those that do overindulge, some folks have that demon, and don't bother (serve to or suggest they try) those that do not indulge,

I commented about alcohol on a previous thread. I can take it or leave it and wouldn't miss it if I never had another sip of booze. Occasionally I like a beer when I don't want a soft drink or water. I don't even use mouthwash that has alcohol in it due to the burn.

I am however a teetotaler when it comes to drugs. Never done any of it, not even pot and I've been around a lot of it where I could have sampled it. It's amazing how many are users. I've witnesses many folks who failed employment entrance exams, got put on rehab programs at work and those who lost very good jobs simply because they can't lay off the stuff and it seems to be getting worse.

I stay away from the stuff, coffee-tea-milkshakes. As to drugs, when I was in treatment for my cancer I had a bottle of liquid oxy for my pain, high test stuff. On the day I turned in my drugs the unopened bottle went with the rest to be disposed of. I AM A COWARD, stupidity hurts and I want no part of it. My worst day of pain was much better then my fear of addiction, as I had seen too much of it. I finally was allowed to have my aspirin back as my bleeding due to cancer had passed. When I need to relax I have Wolf and she likes for me to stroke her head...this has a relaxing affect on the both of us. This is Wolf in my reloading hut relaxing on one of her rugs.

In Viet Nam, the Army used morphine. The philosophy was, treat the pain until the wound is healed, then put the patient through de-tox. It was a bad philosophy, and I had a lot of friends go through hell. I will not take pain killers -- nor will my wife, who was an Army nurse.

I can count the number of pain killers that I have actually taken on one hand,

the number of pills, not the number of scripts,

every time I go to the doc or hospital for a Kidney stone I walk out with a script for percs or something similar, and never get them filled,

I take advil, or aspirin, not much else,

I have used a Codeine cough syrup,

one prescribed by a doc, took it as prescribed, and had the worst hangover from it I have ever had, so that is out, as in I no longer use it

                        I

The way I see it, stay away from that stuff. Then if you're ever in REAL pain, an aspirin will do you.

I had morphine once, I can see how people can become addicted to it. Never felt better in my life.

The Surgeon hands me a bottle
And says, "Drink all you can"
                              And turns around again
With a hacksaw in his hand

Give me some more of that Soldier's Joy
                              You know what I mean
I can't take no more of this pain
                              My leg is turnin' green

It's twenty five cents for whiskey
                              twenty five cents for beer
                              twenty five cents for morphine
                              Get me out of here!

After the Civil War, morphine addiction was known as "the Soldiers' disease." Heroin was developed as a substitute -- to wean men off morphine!
