Exactly right. It's a fallacy to say the Civil War ended slavery. It simply re-emerged under a new form, and has been perpetuated by the same political party since the 1820s.

It'll pass. King is seen as a temporary embarrassment but nothing more.

Meanwhile some of the posters on this thread presume to know what is best for blacks, what should be important to them a group, and that job #1 is that they "come to their senses." Would love to see the YouTube clips from the local food court showing that sales pitch in action.

Have you noticed lately the sudden increase in blacks and latinos that are pretending to be white? White privilege is so great that whites are all rich and blacks and latinos are all slaves that are now pretending to be white in order to receive all those great white privileges? Amazing how the people who got jobs for Blacks are dismissed as "presume(ing) to know what is best for blacks" -- as if lower unemployment isn't good for everyone.

Yes a low unemployment rate for the group is good news, but to treat it as somehow more important than the stuff they themselves might prioritize is to make more or less the same type of we-know-what-is-best-for-you policy mistake that coastal urban liberals make about the rural mid-continental region. As someone put it, when blacks give the GOP a sizable fraction of their votes, that will be proof that something has changed.
