Why are the Generals backing a lost cause ? ...

It's only a matter of time before Maduro is forced to resign
or is forced from office. Only Russia supports him and they
can do virtually nothing to help. After coups, people are held
to account, especially big wig army personnel who probably
caused the rebels grief, so why these Generals are not
defecting to the winning side is surprising. Loyalty, whilst
admirable, goes only so far before becoming suicidal.

If they are complicit then he cooks, they cook. Motivation to hang on at all costs. Those Generals were also promoted based on their loyalty and belief in the current governments socialists principles.

DT in the past, such generals get paid while they can to build a nest egg. Then they find some quiet corner of South America to live in, with a nice compound. No different than Generals in many parts of the world.

There is also the practical issue of physical self preservation. I suspect that if they hadn't shown up for the photo op, they would have been arrested and charged with treason or the like or at best, been unemployed before the end of the day. Of course, as others have pointed out, they are the main beneficiaries of the corrupt system.

Togor is correct. These guys will ride it out until the last moment and if they see it not going in their favor then they will leave.
