    It was typhus that did in Napoleon's Army in 1812 -- spread by lice. Troops took the clothing and blankets of men who died, and contracted the disease that killed them.

        I think the arse freezing weather had more to do with their dying than lice.

          Indirectly -- because of the freezing weather, the living stripped the dead of their clothing and blankets -- and got the lice that infected them with typhus. A mass grave was recently found near Vilnius, where French victims of typhus were buried.
