Just my thoughts here. John McCain often blamed his failed 2008 campaign due to selecting Sarah Palin as a running mate when in fact she was the main attraction for many voters.
He was always an object of resistance siding with the democrats and often going above and beyond what they expected of him even. Just like clockwork he had an opposite rebuttal to EVERYTHING Trump commented on and Lindsey Graham was always there to support McCain. Much like the "3 or 4" here on this forum. I don't recall the two of them ever siding with the president on anything.
The very instant that McCain's fate was announced as being terminal Lindsey Graham did a 180 degree turn around and started supporting the party he was elected under as well as going on camera to support most of Trumps efforts.
My thoughts are that since McCain thought he was so sought after (a legend in his own mind) he had intentions of running for president again in 2020 and would chose his shadow Lindsey Graham as his running mate. Meanwhile he would browbeat Trump and his administration to death hoping that his supporters would switch over to him, those still wanting a Republican (in name only) and being brainwashed by the resistance.
With a McCain/Graham ticket he could assume he would get most of the "fed up" GOP, moderate democrats, minorities and illegal votes (remember McCain wanted amnesty for all) vs the usual trash the democrats put up for candidates.
This continued after his tumor was detected but fell apart as soon as it was announced his days were numbered. Just like Ginsberg he continued to fight for the democrats at home, often holding up votes to remind everyone of his arrogance.
Graham quickly distanced himself from McCain at this point and began a life of "love and loyalty" for our president. Perhaps he hopes to get appointed to some position now.
All that I stated above is just a hunch but seems to have followed the path that Graham has taken. I certainly don't trust the guy regardless of his views now. He will always be a democrat. People can change but not this quickly or radically during midterm and within the same political party.
