Check and checkmate by Red...I was "in" until 1973. Sandpecker is saying officers smuggling drugs aboard the ship and supposedly selling them or giving them to the enlisted sailors, was the problem. Hello! That is a absolute bull sheet lie.
And for dryheat... A-4's were a single seated aircraft and didn't have a back seat. There were a few TA-4 trainers that did (I flew in one), but I never saw one aboard a ship
And I'd like to know when the Iranians ever sank one of "our bigger ships," with one of their little boats.Read, think, UNDERSTAND, commentComment

The Ghost Riders of VA-164, an attack squadron assigned to CVW-21, embarked in USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) flew both the single-seat A4-F and the two-seat TA-4F Skyhawks in combat against targets in North Vietnam during it's 1972, 1973-74, and 1975 deployments.
The Mission: "Two TA-4Fs came on board Hancock in August 1972. Assigned to VA-164, the two-seaters (BuNos 154325 and 153491) had been transferred from
Regarding naval officers and dope, my division officer/navigator in 1973-74 aboard a forward deployed ship; homeported out of Japan smuggled dope aboard ship and regularly smoked it with two of my subordinates while on liberty. Talk about a f'ed up chain of command. This jerkoff was a Naval Academy alumnus and ultimatedly got promoted to Captain too. As I recall, his father was a retired Admiral.Comment

Service academy graduates are no better educated than their ROTC counterparts but they join one heck of an alumni network.
If the Iranians had any brains they'd do like the Viet Cong/NVA did-get our troops hooked on dope. And they'd engage in constant harassing/probing attacks, keep our forces on edge, sleep deprived-like Charley did in Vietnam.Last edited by blackhawknj; 02-22-2019, 05:41.Comment

The Iranians are fanatics. I once did a study of the Iran-Iraq war. Iran used their greater population in human wave attacks. There were whole brigades committed to suicide attacks -- much like Japanese Banzai charges.Comment
