    To tick some off!

What is the "perfect" combat rifle? I say the G3 system that the German Army developed. Fluted chamber that takes just about anything, no gas system, easy to clean, modular, accurate, practice ammo that just drops into place, affordable, scope able.

having never fired a g3 but from what I just read they're rated high.
my choice would be the L1A1.

I'll go with the M14. I have used both the M1 (as an adviser on my first tour) and the M14 (pre-M21 sniper version.) If you know how to use a rifle in combat, they can't be beat.

            wha??

HK got the design from Cetme, who got it from a german guy, etc etc etc, then HK improved it,

good rifle, blowback so no ammo worries, as long as the roller locks are clean etc etc,

affordable, not so much for the originals, but ok or maybe even fair priced for the clones,

much better choices, that are more comfortable to shoot

like Vern (tho I did not serve, just shot them in comps) I'm a fan of the M14,

and honestly, the good ole AR in A2 config is a very good reliable rifle, (as far as what I have and use it for)

AK-47. End of discussion. Simplified product improvement on the original German STG-44. JMHO. bruce.

Notice you said combat rifle versus assault rifle/battle rifle, makes for a “big pot”. Well done....

I’m torn on the best PDW, but your choice is a good one and it’s not even a plastic fantastic.

The AK has ubiquity on it's side, but it loses plenty of engagements, especially when marksmanship and rifle accuracy matter. I've never understood the desire to own a SA AK. SKS, sure, but they're all made that way.

Re: Engagements. If the discussion only encompasses weapons used by first world trained units operating in at intermediate distances, then the AK will be less effective. If the discussion addresses weapons used by first world or lesser trained or less than well trained units operating at distances from hard off the muzzle out to say 200 yds., maybe 300 yds., then the AK will be what it has always been, one of the premier combat rifles ever fielded. It is the post-war equivalent of the SMLE, a superior combat rifle for the conditions commonly encountered men in the field. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.
