John Basilone, awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism on Guadalcanal and killed in action on Iwo Jima, was married to a Woman Marine.

It was a little different Back Then, they thought if you put a woman in uniform, put her behind a desk or driving a truck or in a signals unit-you free a man to fight.

If you're leaving the wire carrying 100 to 120 lbs of gear, ammo and equipment per man -- and some of your "troops" only weigh 120 lbs, and can only carry 40 to 50 lbs, probably not

Our son was in the 1/504 82ABN, when they boarded a C-130 they had to "waddle" to get on board as they were heavily loaded down. Women have their place, I just don't feel in all places.

I agree. I have a friend (sadly deceased now) who was in the 503rd Parachute Infantry -- they jumped onto the Rock (Corregidor). They were jumping with about 150 lbs per man -- mortars, baseplates, bipods, mortar ammo, bazookas and bazooka ammo, machine guns and tripods and ammo, flame throwers and so on.

In recent years I have met two Navy types in critical MOSes who bailed out at 8 and 12 years-the latter on the fast track to his E-7 and gold stripes-because they got fed up with the favoritism shown to women, especially when it comes to sea duty.

That is part of the problem -- the men will be given the hard jobs in order to make room for the women in the cushy jobs. Fewer men will be flying helicopters in the Army, and will be relegated to the Infantry.
