I imagine all the would-be assassin's have been scared out of California by all the illegals and homeless so they won't need any ammo in that state anyway. These new laws assume all citizens are criminals especially if they own guns and vote conservative.

Ammo shortage. In speaking of my 2 cents worth I'm going to say we (myself included) own too many guns of different calibers. We often make an impulse buy because we like the gun or want to round out our collection. In doing so that is yet another weapon that uses a different round than what we already stock.

My brother made a comment one day that a 30-06 was probably the most versatile cartridge there was. It could be loaded from a plinker to a powerful load and could kill any animal found in North America. The round has notable accuracy and the components are plentiful and cheap. Why the need in a 25-06, 308, 348, 284, 280, 270, 7mm, 7mm Mag, all the various 300 mag versions and so on when they don't really perform any better than specific loading of a 30-06 is capable of? Not meaning to step on toes here--I own different caliber guns myself but why? The same for pistols. Aside from 22's do we need more than 2 or 3 other calibers? If we own a 9mm do we need a 380, 9x18, 9x21 Largo?

My point is that it would be easier to stockpile more ammo if we didn't have to do so with so many different calibers. Several cases of 308 that could be shot in several models of rifles would be better than having 300 rounds of 308 plus, 150 of this and 25 rounds of the other and etc....

It can't always be avoided though. I own 1911's because I like the gun--not the cartridge. The same for my M1 carbines and AK-47's.

Those of us who begin our downsizing may think about this though. No need to have 30 different types of ammo sitting around.

Well, first of all you need a .22 rifle -- everyone needs one. Then a varmint rifle -- say a .223. Then a deer/large game rifle and as you say, the .30-06 is ideal.

And of course you need a .22 pistol. Then a defensive handgun -- can't beat the M1911. And a big woods gun, say a .45 Colt.

And everyone needs a 12 gauge shotgun.

That's 7 right there -- bare minimum.

My pdw is Sigmund, folding stock 581 Mini. 50 year old 10/22 with a 4x12x40 as my varmint gun, Colt 4 3/4 Single Action in .22, 870, .50 smoke pole, cross bow and last but not least a Ruger 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk. I have supplies for all only looking for a good 06 now for all the brass that needs to be fired in it.

You may recall that under Obama, there was a severe ammo shortage.

Now, for an '06 I recommend either an 03A3 or a pre-64 Model 70.

Definitely not a post '64. My brother bought a new one and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. He traded it even for Remington 700 '06 and loves it.

Some writer once referred to the pre-'64 Model 70 as "possibly the best mass-produced hunting rifle ever made.' I agree. Mine was made in 1939 and has a replacement bolt -- the original "doll's head" safety interfered with a scope.
