I am looking @ a Rem. 700 from Wally World. I can pick one up with a plastic stock around $300, plan on ditching the stock and putting on a wooden one.

I have never fired anything as reliable as my Chinese SKS. (and my Russian)
Thousands of factory and reloads through it for 20 years - never a problem.
Can't say the same of my SP1 or my mini 14 (180 series)

It wouldn't come from Wally World where you obviously get a discount but have you considered just buying one already with the factory walnut stock? By the time you sand and fit the end cap, pistol grip cap, butt plate and get the correct contour of the barrel sanded you have spent a lot of time, the expense of the stock and it won't be checkered. Buying a nice used stock from ebay or GB may be an option but there will still be that barrel contour that may not mate up. I know at my age I don't need any more projects.

Rifle + stock may = rifle w/stock money wise.

With a wooden stock the cost is around $700 and yes, I have a discount. I enjoy wood working so I will just add it to my many projects. Just bought a jointer for my latest tools, I have years of wood work in front of me. On Friday I have a dinning room table to strip and then refinish as well as some chairs. It is not work for me when I am having fun working on what is ours and not someone else.
