    Flooding along the Mississippi

Lots of damage, lost wages and profits, etc. Some are planning to rebuild on the same spot.
Hundreds of years ago, the American Indian did not build permanent settlements in any flood plain. They knew and were not stupid!

Actually, they did. For example, the Parkin Archeological Site in Arkansas is the site of a large town built right on the banks of the Saint Francis River, and very prone to flooding.

There was the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. It seems nobody learned from that.

between the .gov and the insurance you bought , you will have enough cash to rebuild, so why not?

Actually, I don't -- this county has no flood insurance. We had it once, but didn't like the government regulations that went with it, and voted it out. In '08, we had two Hundred Year Floods, back-to-back on the White river, and the Quorum Court put flood insurance on the ballot -- and we voted it down.

And, along with floods, those mudslides in CA. People there to rebuild on same spot.

Is there any place that isn't subject to natural disasters? Flood, earthquake, hurricane, tornado, forest fire -- you'd be hard put to be safe from all of them,

That's bad -- we had some people with cabins on the river during our last flood, and they were moaning that people voted against flood insurance. Flood insurance will pay off it you buy it AFTER the flood -- up to six months. I explained to one of them that if we got flood insurance, he could never re-build his cabin, and his land would be worthless.

I have lived along the Mighty Ohio and have seen my share of floods and unfortunately participated in a couple. Where I live now if it floods the whole world is in trouble. Now severe winter weather happens every year. Bone numbing cold, heavy wet snow and ice, loss of power. Yep, we prepare and are use to it all.
