The Fifties, when the cars were works of art ...

and whistling at a cute girl didn't earn you a horsewhipping.
A fabulous time to have been young - as was I.

One thing I don't miss is the brown tailpipe emissions of those old cars. No fun to breath that.

have you ever stood in the pits when NHRA top fuel and funny cars are started up?

or in the garage area, or stands for a Nascar race?

My second date with my wife to be, back in 1981 was going to the local dragstrip in Manhattan, KS. I told her if they ever invented a perfume for women that smelled like burnt rubber and nitromethane, I was a goner.

stood in the pits down in Dinwiddie when they had NHRA ,,

can't remember which Top Fuel, and Funny Cars I was standing at (against the rope) but the smell when they cranked them up was amazing,

ditto Nascar, not a huge fan, but at the track with the high octane burning is another good smell

IRL came to town and nothing,, guessing alcohol does not put out the aroma

No, but I often stood in Victoria Bus Station where a dozen or so
diesel engined Buses stood with engines running. Place was full
of diesel fumes and smoke - but as kid about to go the seaside
I loved it. Loved buses ever since - I even have a collection of
American cast iron toy buses from the 20s 30s.

You probably know this but the fumes from the old Greyhound buses always smelled different from most other diesels because they were 2 stroke engines made by Detroit (GM), sometimes called Detroiter diesels.

My first date with my wife I took her to a parachute jump. She stood on the drop zone and watched me come out of a CV-2 Caribou at 12,500 feet, free fall for 60 seconds -- and blow every panel out of my Para Commander on opening. I came down on the reserve parachute.

We have always agreed I gave her fair warning what life with me would be like.

Mike- how many jumps did you have on that PC? I never blew a panel in mine in over 700 jumps, even in head down opening.

It had about that many jumps on it -- and it failed in a spectacular manner.

I just bought a beautiful, original 1950s Packard, straight 8, a few months ago. If I could figure out how to upload pictures again, I would.
