There was some evidence that several of those killed had been smoking dope. Reagan ordered a crackdown on drug use in the military, I recall seeing a cartoon by Conrad showing a carrier sailing away with the caption "The smoking lamp is out." and dope plants in the sea. -
Well JiminVirginia your request for the moment of silence was appreciated.
As blackhawk mentioned some of those killed had been smoking dope . Perhaps they had, but I certainly hope that doesn't taint the memory of what they were doing out there. Many of us pre 80s vets will remember the prevelance of dope in the military...... yet they still did their jobs .
May 26 on the Nimitz ... one of a list of many. The Forrestal on 29th of July with the death of 134 was the cause of every US Sailor being trained as a fire fighter ....
I served on the Kennedy that collided with the Belknap on November 22, 1975 with the death of eight. Seven crew of the Belknap and one on the KennedyComment

how is either comment relevant to this thread?
I vaguely remember the incident in the papers ( I was a senior in high school)
I do remember one of my Uncles, (Navy, Vietnam era) talking about fire duty and training for falling overboard or having to jump overboard for what ever reason,
scary stuffComment

Neither is relevant."The first gun that was fired at Fort Sumter sounded the death-knell of slavery. They who fired it were the greatest practical abolitionists this nation has produced." ~BG D. UllmanComment

People perform their jobs-their duties-a lot better when they are cold stone sober. Here in NJ there was a bad spill at one the refineries one night. The company determined that people had shown up for work intoxicated, there was some drinking on the job, the proper procedures were not followed. Those responsible were fired the next morning.
The Navy cracked down hard, shakedowns and mass punishments, extra duty, restriction to quarters, loss of recreational time, blocked leaves, blocked promotions. On one of the carriers one section was punished severely in that manner, two of the other sailors grabbed the miscreant-and threw him overboard.Last edited by blackhawknj; 05-28-2019, 09:49.Comment

There is an experiment where three monkeys are placed in a cage with a dangling banana. When one monkey goes for the banana, they all get a shock. They quit messing with the banana. Then one of the monkeys is taken out. When his replacement goes for the banana, the other two monkeys beat the crap out of him. This goes on, replacing them monkey by monkey, until finally NONE of the monkeys in the cage have ever been shocked -- but any new monkey who tries to get that banana gets laid out.Comment
