    Air Force allows Sikh to wear turban, beard and remain unshaven

    What the hell is going on? The word Uniform means they should all dress alike.

    Traditionally Sikhs in the British and Indian Armies wear the turban and beard. It is part of their religion -- and the constitution protects their right.

    Amendment I
    Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

      The Army has allowed that for some time, I saw a picture of a Sikh soldier, he looked like he should have served in the Civil War.
      The ban on beards came in with WWI-the gas mask. Payton C. March wore a Van Dyke, William Howard Taft was the last president to wear a mustache, they've all been clean shaven since then.

        In an organization already permeated with homos & transfreaks, a beard & turban seem less than catastrophic.

          They used to say, "don't ask, don't tell." But I say if you see a soldier carrying a 9mm you don't need to ask.

            One would think that a beard and turbine would cause a problem in wearing a gas mask and helmet.

              Right.

              We weren't even allowed to have a beard or handlebar mustache at the refinery I worked at. You never know when you will have to put a gas mask on or a fresh air breathing apparatus (the hair won't allow a seal) so they were prohibited. Seems to me the military would have the same or similar requirements.

              Plus you could end up being extremely ugly. Might be useful as a toilet brush though.

                The be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Air Force, an officer is required to demonstrate his willingness to overlook any reduction in the combat readiness of any airman, in order to accommodate any minority or personal tendency. If a commander insists upon uniformity and competence in one's job from any group other than white males, he can forget any promotion to field rank. The Air Force Academy is temple to affirmative action. Just what I see. Regards, Clark

                  Reminds me of some of the Star Wars characters.

                    We was rotten 'fore we started -- we was never disciplined;
                    We made it out a favour if an order was obeyed;

                      Historically the Sikhs are very good warriors. I don't care who we have as long as they will fight when duty calls.

                          Read about a white guy with dreds who opened a rasta church where weed (not legal in his state) is part of the worship ceremony. Not cutting it with the regulators, I guess. And I suppose a church that practiced human sacrifice would be considered to run afoul of the rights of the sacrificee. Bottom line is that no right granted in the constitution is truly unlimited, and it falls to judges to make a call when rights conflict.

                            Sure do all the time with respect to "old school" Mormons, who've been persecuted relentlessly for the "crime" of polygamy. You can marry a transfreak (i.e., a non-human), but not a perfectly normal second wife.

                            US ragheads get away with doing the same thing secretly, but they are of course a protected minority.
