I proposed free school choice -- set standards for a school, set achievement standards for students, and say what you're willing to pay extra for.

Let ANYONE open a school, and if it meets the school standards, and brings the students to the achievement levels, pay them 90% of the education budget for every student they attract. Let good schools flourish and bad schools go broke.

My 11th grade English teacher in high school was an alcoholic and came to "teach" drunk. Many days she would just piddle around and spend the whole hour calling the roll (no kidding). The school system got rid of her after one year but I had to contend with her that one year. I would have been much better off just staying home. I had a few good teachers but most, you could tell, were burned out, just biding their time for retirement.
