We could probably cut military spending by 1/4 and not hurt our defense readiness if we were willing to cut back on some of the toys that each service branch likes to have. I wonder for example how relevant aircraft carriers will be in the coming era of hypersonic weapons. We could also do a better job of stretching the taxpayer dollar when it comes to providing medical care for seniors. One piece of low hanging fruit--let the government drive hard bargains with pharma on behalf of Medicare recipients. Stop the games like what's being done with insulin prices currently for example. If the gap can't be bridged completely, let some tax cuts expire.
Anyways, regarding insulin:
I argue that the people pocketing the extra profits don't need a tax cut.Last edited by togor; 06-26-2019, 05:33.Comment

Here in NJ we had the phony school funding-"can't rely on property taxes " battle in the 1970s. The result-the state income tax. Which went for pay raises.
Military spending ? I recall an editorial cartoon from the 1960s-showed a Congressman wearing a sandwich board:
Front :"Keep cutting military spending ! "
Back: "But not in MY district !"
Entitlements-Welfare ? When did that become a RIGHT ?
Social Security ?-when retirement funds are locked up safely in funds and accounts that belong SOLELY to the beneficiary-or their heirs.
Those of us who took care of our health and avoided the bad habits and bad living that leads to health problems have little sympathy for those who didn't.Last edited by blackhawknj; 06-26-2019, 05:34.Comment

And those of us who worked, scrimped and saved and managed our investments have little sympathy with those who didn't -- and who aren't bearing their share of the load. Here in NJ we had the phony school funding-"can't rely on property taxes " battle in the 1970s. But in your case it was all taxpayer or inherited money!! You didn't hit a double, you were born on second base! And taxpayer supported jobs got you to home! So everyone should do it like you did, huh?Comment

Go easy on that.
Inherited Oil Rights are not easy to come by, but they do help in politics."The first gun that was fired at Fort Sumter sounded the death-knell of slavery. They who fired it were the greatest practical abolitionists this nation has produced." ~BG D. UllmanComment

We already pay taxes for roads or infrastructure. Every gallon of gasoline or diesel is taxed. Every tire is taxed. Car tags are nothing but a tax. The feds and states are suppose to contribute for highway upkeep and building of new roads too but every time a road or bridge needs repairing all you hear is "there's no money for that" or "we'll have to establish a toll". Where does the money go ????????????? If it is going toward highway jobs then they are all desk jobs because I seldom see any one physically working on the roads and when I do is usually contractors.Comment

That doesn't contradict what I said. I would allow taxes for roads and ports -- and I didn't specify HOW these taxes should be levied. We already pay taxes for roads or infrastructure. But you are right -- where DOES the money go? We pay more than enugh in taxes to build and repair our roads -- and they're falling apart.Comment

If it wasn't for the trucking companies, we wouldn't have the roads we do. And it isn't just the taxes they pay -- imagine how our commerce would be strangled without the road system we have.Comment

no idea about what Vern inherited or not, not my business,
however if you income comment was from his military service, is that not a job like anyone else?
or would you rather see a volunteer or mandatory service with no long term benefits?
asking , not being snarkyComment

For the record, I inherited virtually nothing. I graduated from Pleasant Plains High School in Pleasant Plains, AR. NONE of the teachers in that school had a college degree. How does that equate to some kind of unfair advantage?Comment
