I have a cousin that worked as a guard for a short time,

he left cause he did not want to deal with the inmates, and also did not want to be associated with the other guards,
seems a lot were smuggling stuff in for the inmates

Not unusual, how else will the stuff come in? People, who have criminal tendencies, usually do not concern themselves with punishment just getting caught. I worked our jail as needed to relieve a CO, the cons were always looking for a "friend" or feel sorry for them and do something "extra" using something small and innocent. I always figured it they wanted something that they were not entitled to the answer was no. One CO didn't and traded sexual favors with a 15 yo. I came in Monday morning and the CO was now in isolation with a court appearance at 0900! His family could not make the $100,000.00 bail so he sat there in isolation for 5 months until his trial. He did get credit for time served against his 10 years. He did get out after 6 months on JDR, last I saw/heard of him.

              Exactly right!

There was a case in a Federal Prison where an inmate gave a photograph to a Corrections Officer -- the photo showed the Corrections Officer's 6-year old daughter playing in the back yard!

I used that in a training course I was conducting. I would ask the students what they would do about it. Almost to a man, they'd say "Search visitors more thoroughly."

You should see the looks on their faces when I told them it was another Corrections Officer who took the picture and smuggled it in!

When one is dealing with a con/ex-con, leave nothing to chance especially your guard!

Oh, yeah! And the thing about it is, if a CO is found doing crap like that, he goes to prison -- something NO CO wants to do. As a result, no one talks because the COs can get you killed more quickly than the Mafia.

I was one of the two deputies assigned to take the ex-co to the old Ohio State Prison and it was not a pleasant, thou quiet trip. Taking him inside was akin to going to a funeral with the realization that we Deputies were then going to the steak house to eat and then would be back home that night. He on the other hand was on his trip to hell!
