Well togor, Vern's post was about abilities and life choices, nothing about inheritance. Stay on track.

It's easy to make better choices when you have the resources. This should be an obvious fact of life. When a heavily-outgunned army gets wiped out, do we say, "well, the commander should have done things differently"? Vernon's assumption is that everyone started with the same draw as he did, which is clearly not true. As for the conversation even happening, I call BS. Vernon doesn't even talk with people of different politics, much less win arguments with them.Last edited by togor; 07-06-2019, 03:47.Comment

I worked with many of this ilk who were O.K. with higher taxes...except for them. I suggested that "they" write a check to the Bureau of the Debt is located in Parkersburg, WV to share their wealth. For some odd reason none wanted to do this, wonder why?Allen, I agree. And ALL taxes should be based on TRUE need, for constitutional purposes. As Jefferson said, "The government is best that governs least." And also that taxes least.
When leftists talk about how the "rich" should pay more, I always say, "How much do YOU pay?"
Then I tell them how much I pay.
"Well, I don't make as much as you do."
"Why NOT? Aren't you just as smart as I am? Aren't you just as healthy as I am? Why DON'T you make as much as I do -- and pay as much as I do?"
"Well, I chose not to do what you did."
"AHA! You mean you chose to SHIRK. You chose NOT to bear your fair share of the load."
Do you think they ponder that and see the truth? They do not, they get mad -- as if it's my fault they're shirkers!

So it's ok for people that don't inherit a wad or have resources otherwise to just give up, not apply themselves, play the victim card, live off the goobermint, etc? Life choices should dictate more than what you say it does. Many didn't have a pot to urinate in and have done extremely well in life because of their abilities and choices.
I have a 23 year old coworker who basically raised himself since age 14 with no dad and a non supportive mom. Last summer he graduated with a bachelors degree and is working on a masters and has no college debt. He busted his butt applying for scholarships and worked his arse off at a couple of part time jobs while being a full time student. Plus he recently purchased a small house, which he financed, but is still an accomplishment at his age. It is possible to succeed without inheriting an oil field.Comment

Funny.... here on this forum I've explained I'm a Vet, I've never collected a social benefit or help from anyone.... or even been able to bring myself to ask, I run a small business and employ people, I purchase my own medical insurance . In short I live the epitome of a conservative minded life style .So it's ok for people that don't inherit a wad or have resources otherwise to just give up, not apply themselves, play the victim card, live off the goobermint, etc? Yet due to an oppsing viewpoint I'm labeled a socialist, a nazi, a drunk and mentaly unstable from those that live off socialistic benefits or comfortable life long pensions from socialist programs like the military police or fire etc etc

I guess I'm proof of that -- my Dad died broke. But I've always managed to provide my wife and family with a house, and now I'm pretty comfortable. I did it by working, scrimping and saving, and investing. So it's ok for people that don't inherit a wad or have resources otherwise to just give up, not apply themselves, play the victim card, live off the goobermint, etc? But if a person does inherit something it is from those who lived before you who scrimped, saved, worked hard, took risk and chances and more than likely did without to purchase land or start a business. Plus, all was done with taxed dollars.
I see no big sin if someone is fortune enough to inherit something. The more I can pass on to my kids the better.Comment

When my wife and I first met we had 35 cents between us, I had been laid off for 6 months and unemployment was gone. In the almost 40 years together this is our 2nd paid off home due to us working together. It hasn't been easy but together we did it.

Absolutely! What has the bureaucracy done for me that I should love them more than I love my children and grandchildren.
And when you do that, you do your duty to your country. The American dream is that each generation will have it better than the last generation. Give your kids a leg up, and they will become productive citizens.Comment

Why does it have to be just your kids? Why not generalize it to find ways to pay it forward to the next generation? If the US taxpayers had been unwilling to fund a very expensive standing army, then Vernon would have needed to find an entirely different line of work. It's the "I did it all myself" attitude that I have a problem with, not the values of hard work and thrift.Comment

is your will set up to sent all your assets to 'pay it forward' to the next group of kids you don't know or are not related to?
both my parents were Gov't workers, so I guess if the taxpayers balked at paying their salaries, I would have starved?Comment

Inheritance. Not always a good thing. But people who are smart leave their money to smart kids. It kind of works out that way if they devoted equal energy to raising children. Some kids glom onto good education and run with it whether rich or poor. I guess, per Togor, we can shotgun funds to the next gen(or third world countries I perceive) and hope something sticks. We are humans, we have lots of brain cells. Lions and tigers and monkeys are socialists. But have you ever watched a nature vid where the big lion took the leg away? It's reality. If you think that you are deserving of stuff for no reason at all you probably play the lottery. It's day dreaming. It seems that there is enough overflow these days to underwrite lay-a-bouts but said lay-a-bouts can't complain when it stops. Capitalism isn't really all that mean(but it can be and has been), we are humans, mostly we adhere to some rules of decorum and morality. Well hopefully. Nazis was 1940. Socialism was 1919 and then 1950. It's over. Vietnam, China, Korea(N&S) are not reading the little red book anymore. It blending. I guess the U.S. is too. I don't like it, but I guess I'll have to get used to it. I just fear the lawyers. Good job Boggs. Give your wife a hug for me. But how bout shutting up about your old job?If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.Comment
