    Welfare For The Heartland

The Trump administration has released details of a $16 billion plan to compensate farmers who've lost money as a result of the trade dispute with China. Some economists say it's too generous.

The administration is paying farmers 2x their losses due to low bean prices. Like getting fired and collecting twice your salary in unemployment. Classic Socialism, the government picking winners and losers and rewarding its friends. The Squad has nothing on DJT.

Why should farmers suffer loss simply because of a tariff purposed to force china to yield on critical issues? Once upon a time Carter greatly damaged peanut farmers as he weaponized their crop to use as a "protest" against the soviets. Sincerely. bruce.

Sounds like Carter's weaponization of peanuts should serve as an example of what not to do?

Re: Peanuts. Not entirely. Lamentably Carter was not successful in his efforts w/ the soviets. Likely due to his less than forceful approach. Others will of course have different opinions. Trump has had some gains w/ china. Remains to be seen what will be the consequences. Time will tell. But, he is to be commended acting to rein in chinese economic aggression. And he is to be commended for not leaving it to American farmers to shoulder the costs of that effort.

Shed no tears for peanut farmers--they're protected from foreign competition by a 163% ad valorem tax on imported peanuts that dates from the '30s. But the greatest recipients of federal farm-welfare are sugar producers--by law, 85% of the sugar sold here must come from domestic production, though this restriction is created by a system of subsidies far more complex than a simple ad valorem tax, employing hundreds of federal bureaucrats to administer the system; it's a win-win situation--more money for both producers & gov't parasites. Only the public looses out on this deal.

Soybean producers, as pawns in this struggle against China's unfair trade practices, which even the Dems support, deserve temporary compensation for their losses.
