My advisor used the rain forest ecosystem as an example of 'don't mess with a natural system'. Rain forests took a very, very long time to evolve and the nutrient layer is only inches thick. Notice those cuts and clear areas are really empty? They are basically sterile. Nothing will grow there until the rain forest creeps back in. The ranchers think it will become savanna; wrong.

Traditional agriculture in the Amazon used the slash and char technique, which had the effect of increasing the amount of carbon in the soil. That carbon, among other properties hangs on to phosphorus, an important water soluble nutrient. Over the years, small islands of high fertility arose. But as barretcreek says, in most of the Amazon, the nutrients are above the soil and constantly recycled. The government doesn't care.
