Yes, poor people (like me and my dead wife) could never afford to sue giant corporations without the contingency rule.

I am into a law suit against a guy that bulldozed hundreds of large trees off his property and onto mine. I sold my property for $30,000 less than it's appraised value because of the damage. In order to sue, I had to sell to prove a loss. Two years and $6,000 dollars ($250/Mo.) later the opposing attorneys continue to file counter claims and anything else to delay the process.

Imagine a individual suing Volkswagen for the defective airbags...

The law is ponderous. For good reason. We know nothing about Reds situation. Is it aggravating? Yes. Are they "sticking it to us"? Yes, to a degree. When you are charged for every little bit of correspondence, including postage it seems that way. If you want to sue, by God, you better have a real case. Lawyers are no different from any other kind of business, they get yahoos who want to sue for "one million dollars" over some petty thing. They see yahoos all the time. Have you ever dealt with the public? I have a folder that illustrates the nonsense that individuals will sue over. Now, the gold mine(for the lawyers and to some extent the plaintiff and by virtue the public) is something like hot coffee. Any wonder when thousands of people die from a product there aren't wolves snapping at the bones? And while we're on the subject; how many of those that died had terminal cancer and planned to "load up on something" before they called it quits? Dr. Death went to prison for helping out the dying. I don't think J&J was trying to emulate the Good Doctor. It's nitwits who think if one makes you feel good, then ten will be awesome. That's not J&J's fault that individuals can't read the instructions. It was an accidental overdose. Yeah. But I guess they should have been prepared for that. Maybe they were. They made millions and getting sued is part of the program. Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin down the plain.. It didn't sweep away the stupid people.

Had to "hire" a lawyer once in a case, was billed for lunch "consultations" with another person. Just barely broke even on that case, next year the lawyer was nailed for using senile clients funds for partying. He got disbarred and sent to prison over that "little" stealing. Had a nice practice, home, family and gave it all up to play around. Have only met one decent lawyer in my life and he was a former Marine JAG so he knows what honor is.
