Since you raise the topic, let me entertain you with a story from today's paper. As most of you probably know, Canada legalized the sale of marijuana earlier this year. It was up to each province to decide how they wanted to control the sales. In Ontario where I live, the government decided that it would be sold through a new government owned corporation (known as a Crown Corporation) which would licence producers and retail outlets. It's truly hard to believe (although as a life long federal bureaucrat, I should know better) but the Crown Corporation lost $42 million in its first year of operation. Every gang banger on the street corner makes money on drugs but a government run operation can't match small business competence and loses its shirt. They claim that the loss was due to a shortage of product to sell. Sad but true!

Start-up costs? Businesses often lose money at first. Not that I favor legal pot but I think the verdict is rendered too soon.

        true,

buildings, rent, contracts, admin cost, training the help etc etc , however the reason given is a bit preposterous,,,

unless of course, someone over under estimated sales etc for the first year (possible) ,

The US Internal Revenue Service took over a famous brothel in Nevada, the Mustang Ranch, for not paying taxes. By law, when the IRS takes over a business, they have to run it. The Mustang Ranch went broke -- the Government can't make money selling booze and sex!!

Why does it always have to be me?

A business in arrears on taxes is already under stress. Being liquidated under government control says nothing except that an ailing business failed to survive. Vern insults the intelligence of his audience...again.

I think Conforte was convicted of tax evasion.

I used to work for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (as a civilian). About 20 years ago our legislation was changed to allow the police to seize proceeds of crime. The police could seize the assets but like in the US, they had to maintain them until the courts ruled that they were indeed proceeds of crime and could be forfeited to the Crown. The head of the unit told me that when they were setting things up, they turned to the FBI for advice. The FBI said the the key thing that they had learned was NEVER to seize any assets that ate: not horses and not women.

In both cases they are seen as quick and easy solutions to complicated problems.
October 9, 2015 at 1:30AM I was bicycling home-and hit by a drunk. Woke up in the ambulance. They gave me a Percocet at the hospital and a prescription-which I didn't get filled, my leg was sore where from I made contact, and I was sore over being hit by a drunk. Ice on my leg made a difference. The psychotropic drugs ? One man told me the difference in his MIL between being on her "meds" and not is the difference between Jekyll and Hyde. Unfortunately like so many of those people she prefers being Hyde.

my last bad kidney stone I went to the hospital,
probably should have just toughed it out and stayed home, but the wife insisted,

so off we go , intermittent pain, sometimes severe,

doc gave me a shot of morphine,

I am laid back on a gurney, tired from a 65hr workweek, and fall asleep,
                        nurse wakes me
                        I fall back asleep,

nurse wakes me and says to stay awake,

I get grumpy and said I was tired dammit, leave me alone,

she sat me up, chewed out (nicely) and made the wife keep me up,

went home with a prescription for some pain killer, and flomax,

tried the flowmax, I could have likely pissed a hole thru concrete after a day of taking it,
tossed the script for the pain pills in the trash (torn up)

passed the stone about a week after I stopped taking flomax,

had a bad cold\sinus\respiratory infection one fall,
got a script for some codeine cough syrup,
wife insisted on me taking it, and taking it as prescribed (I have a habit of just taking a swig from the bottle at the times directed)

                        2 teaspoons every 4 hrs,

woke up the next day with the worst hangover i have every had, (and I drink)

head pounding, cotton mouth, felt exhausted and flat out bad

poured the syrup down the drain, if I got a cough at home the next few nights, I just did a shot of Vodka from the freezer, (only 1 needed at night, burned that stuff right out)
no hangover, no cotton mouth, no headache, and slept better, cough gone for the rest of the night,,

Togor, I can assure you Mustang Ranch was not a failing business under stress. Conforte(mob) got too greedy and the feds had been after him for years. He is living very comfortably in either Brazil or Argentina I can't remember which one it is that doesn't have a extradition treaty with us. I saw a interview he did from his beach side cabana some years ago.

Notwithstanding, it doesn't prove the Federal Government can't run anything. That's a convenient narrative trotted out for political reasons. Nobody talks much about the TVA and yet the lights stay on. Much depends on how involved Congress gets.
