In a Fox News comment section of all places a guy wrote a cogent explanation of why booby traps have been poorly received by the courts for a very long time now. Bottom line is the trap could go off on anyone, including first responders with a legitimate reason for being there.

And even if it's not some arrested development dangerous Bubba idea, you still can't just shoot people for stealing your possessions. Set up a camera, and if you have permission you can take a picture of the burglar. So you have a great picture to put in your album titled 'the guy that stole my stuff'.
If your dogged, you go on Craig's List like a number of people have and find your stuff up for sale. It's really sweet to bust some Jag*** who's dumb enough to mess with someone who is probably in his age group and five times smarter. If you live in apartments or some other low rent kind of place this goes with the territory. You know, street smarts. And hopefully you have real smarts and you move.
Rich people are just so lackadazisical that they don't bother to close the garage door or lock the car doors. But it's a right of passage for the other rich kids to break in to cars.
I'm lucky that I live in this great neighborhood that is right between the low(er) end(only a block away) and the really high end. No one is interested in robbing us. Well, that's my theory. We've had two minor bouts of thefts(well, it's minor since they didn't rob me) in the thirty years I've lived here. Knock on wood. Well, then there were the shootings but that's for another day.
