Are people catching on to the "Charity" scam ? ...

or have they figured out that charity begins at home ?
Most charities are run by people who award themselves with
fat salaries way out of wack with what the same job in a
normal everyday business would warrant. I'd hazard a guess
that of every $100 donated, probably a pittance would go to
the people or cause intended, the balance going toward salaries,
travel and other expenses and of course, the expense accounts.
There are no doubt honestly run charities, but the only one I'm
aware of is the Salvation Army - the only one I give to by either
donating salable items or buying someone else's discard.

I'm sure there's plenty of honest charities but we have found that the Salvation Army is the only charity we've given to that hasn't sold our name and address to the other charities.

Over the years when we would give to a different outfit we would get a flood of request from numerous other agencies within a couple of weeks. Plus, they somehow get your phone number.

We had to stop all of them except the SA and the local needs.

And some while back a list of salaries of charity CEOs was published.
Some were outrageous, most were kinda overboard, but the
Salvation Army CEO salary was surprisingly low.
And I might add, they're the first to arrive when a crisis hits with
food and blankets.

The Salvation Army was my family's favorite and the only one I will contribute to. And have you ever actually known anybody who benefited from these charities ?
People I know who have worked in soup kitchens come away disillusioned. One woman said the clients there either look like meth heads or they should be sent to Weight Watchers.
My church has an Angel Tree with requests from the county social services agency. I took the one for a tricycle for a 3 year old boy. I told the young woman in charge of it I would find one at the thrift shops I patronize. She said "That's a very good idea."

when I was in the grocery biz, we had people beg us to allow them to set up on the sidewalk to take donations,

Wounded Warrior was the worst, as far as scams, (seems some take the promotional material , set up a table, and turn it into a side job)

we ran off several 'WW groups',

Salvation Army was always welcome, as well as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts

we allowed a few other local charities to set up, but after the fiasco with some of the Wounded Warrior frauds, all had to be approved by Corporate

yep I noticed that too. if they're so poor how come they can afford a fully automatic ak47? they run about 12 grand around here.

I wouldn't argue that. Unfortunately, one cannot (neither easily not legally) carry it back into the States.

That said, when in Liberia last year I saw mostly FN FALs. I wondered whether they were inch or metric but wifey and my group leader (both native to the area) dissuaded me from asking...........<grin>

keeping with the sarcasm of the post I took a stab at the price. I have no idea how much one costs, nor would I want one if I could afford it.

Go to any charity and download the 990 form. Look for two things -- how much the people running the charity are paid and how much they give out to OTHEER charities in grants.

You give a dollar to Habitat for Humanity. They take 15 cents for administrative expenses and give the rest to the March of Dimes, who take 15 cents and pass on the rest to Food for the Poo, who take 15 cents and pass it on to The American Cancer Society, and so on. It's like a lump of ice being passed from one red-hot hand to another. By the time it gets to the people who need help, there's nothing left but a wisp of steam.
