I was just joking and yes, the Baron, while flying low, was shot from the ground by a soldier with a rifle.
Remember my thoughts on causes of plane crashes ? ...

Lots of dead people including politicians die because they were so great that laws of the land as well as the laws of physics didn't apply to them. Paul Wellstone, the Carnahans in MO, JFK Jr., and Ted Stevens. Essentially they all died because they disregarded sane safety warnings. There were other choppers that were denied clearance but Kobe Bryant apparently received "special," treatment.Comment

I had a great uncle killed in a small plane crash in the 1950s. My mother said he had a younger friend, a frustrated military pilot-earned his wings but never saw action. They took off one day, the weather closed in they were trying to find the airfield and....
General William Tunner, who took over the Berlin Airlift and got it running properly, required his pilots to fly on instruments only, even in good weather.
I am not a pilot (I do fly, but only in my superhero identity). I have long been a map aficionado, I look at satellite pictures of areas I am familiar with, places I have been, driven or bicycled through, I note how different they look from the air, in different seasons, light conditions, etc.Comment

RAF Captain Arthur Roy Brown takes the credit too. Most articles agree that the Baron was killed by a single .303 bullet. There is controversy though about who. A lot of people may have been shooting at him at the time.
"The RAF credited Brown with shooting down the Red Baron, but it is now generally agreed that the bullet which hit Richthofen was fired from the ground"

there was a TV show a few years ago that looked at the subject and had all kinds of info,
field reports, maps of different units positions etc,
the show debunked the RAF pilot on the kill shot,
cannot remember what channel or the name of the show,
I do recall seeing some news reports of the same at the timeComment
