    Movie 1917

Saw the show last weekend and was quite disappointed with the plot. Two WWI soldiers had to travel 9 miles behind enemy lines to deliver an order to cease an attach the next day that was going to be an German ambush on English soldiers that would wipe out 1600 brit troops. All the while, British airplanes were flying over that could have delivered the message by air in ten minutes.
    What a stupid plot.

Stupid plot aside, was it worth watching ?
If you did away with all the movies that have stupid plots
there wouldn't be much left to go see.

Haven't seen it yet (DVD?) but I understand they shot the movie in long takes, which may make the film more immersive.

there is another thread on the movie,

and I have read reviews on other forums,

most seem to like it, and of course, being gun folks, nit pick some stuff,

I'm hoping to see it in the next couple weeks, (looks like maybe the 8th)

meanwhile, if you want to watch a movie that has issues,, go see the new Star Wars Movie,,,,,

        Disney has ruined that franchise,

Some movies about the civil war had soldiers using trapdoor rifles which weren't invented till after the war. So, I would expect to see some M1 garands in this movie.

In Hogan's Heroes Sgt. Shultz used a Krag rifle.

we saw it opening week. Yes it was worth watching. It kept your attention and seemed historically accurate as near as I could tell (weapons, uniforms, events etc) I'll buy the DVD when it comes out

And the pickelhaube shown in the opening credits isn't German, it's an American Army dress helmet dating to the 1870s.

I thought the same thing. I also thought some of the action scenes were remakes of Roadrunner vs. Wilee Coyote cartoons... but the militaria was pretty accurate and the special effects were excellent. It was worth watching.

I understand this movie is a work of fiction set in WWI. If it catches the feel of the time and is well done it accomplishes its purpose.

One of the most common devices in war drama is the small group of men on a very dangerous mission.

Saving Private Ryan was a work of fiction set in WWII. There are things in the realistic sense I wondered about in that one too. For instance, Miller takes a squad on a mission behind enemy lines, only six of his eight men are actually effective trigger pullers, one is a conscientious objector medic and the other is an almost worthless clerk. Why didn't he ask for an extra fire team (a BAR man and three riflemen.) he would have also surely gotten it. Also, in the assault on the SS troops at the radar station; he has a sniper. On Omaha beach he used the sniper to neutralize the machine gun crews blocking his beach exit. Why didn't he use the sniper to kill the machine gunner and then everybody who touched the gun? what had changed? Additionally I had relatives who fought across Europe. From what they said the last SS guy standing would never have been allowed to surrender in that circumstance.

Obviously the situations I mentioned were included for two reasons, avoiding cluttering the plot with too many extra characters and to provide a web of drama leading up to the final part of the movie at the bridge. Those things may not make strict logical progression but do make for a better plot and contilnuity.

Saving Private Ryan was a very good movie that does make a real effort to show the feel of the time, so is worthwhile. If 1917 does the same its mission accomplished. I would have stricter standards for a documentary like "Band of Brothers" or "Tora Torra Tora." Nit picking fiction too much can ruin the experience.

A couple of movies about WWI that I found interesting. Both reiterations (1979 and 1919) of “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “They Shall Not Grow Old”. The latter is a colorized version of some real old stuff. I don’t normally like colorizing, but I did make an exception.

The first version of All Quiet on the Western Front is my all time favorite. The realism of the tragedy of the human side of the war............
