If the decrease in opioid deaths actually slightly affects the statistics of a 300 million population, then I'd say opioids are a problem. Hardly anyone with any brains smokes anymore so, yeah a slight increase.

"Shouldn't Trump be doing more for small farms then? Besides squeezing their labor supply? On Trump's watch."
It don't make a difference who the president is.. Small farms are on the down turn the same as the other small business', they can not compete against the bigger corporate farms and/or large farmer conglomerates. The small farms have a hard time competing. To exist they will need a lot of government help and to diversify and grow crops they can make money on.. I have not been a farmer, maybe others who are one or have been, could help with this post.... possibly now China or other countries will want more types of produce that would help the small farmer. don't know, not a farmer.....
"Besides squeezing their labor supply?" ...............Do you want more illegals for labor?Last edited by rayg; 01-31-2020, 06:26.Comment

Well Ray there is the matter of how the Federal government pays out farm subsidies, slanting the playing field towards the big boys. And yes that includes how the USDA doles out trade war bailouts.
I'm ambivalent on the subject of Latinos in dairy farms. (Not just the small ones either!) But if they were the only people left to work those hours at those wages, then surely that is the way of business too, yes? Better or worse than a collapse of the dairy industry?Comment

Okay, fill me in on how the government pays out the farm subsides slanted to the big boys....
I thought the Gov. allows those folks to come in to work via visas already. I'm not that smart, fill me in how to do that!....Last edited by rayg; 01-31-2020, 08:25.Comment

Are you saying that the government doesn't favor large agribusiness? Sounds like it.
Why do farmers prefer illegals? Ask them. Were I to guess, dairymen like family-oriented people, who they see as more likely to take good care of the animals.

Paul Ryan, 2013.“Right now, the federal government favors the big guy over the little guy...We subsidize large agribusiness and the wealthy at the expense of the family farmer and the taxpayer. It’s an egregious example of cronyism. Both parties are to blame, but I’m hopeful both sides can come together to set this right.”Last edited by togor; 01-31-2020, 09:14.Comment

You know you're debating a socialist when they start asking questions like that -- which are based on the assumptions the government should choose the winners and losers in the economy.
Shouldn't Trump be doing more for buggy whip makers? How about for flint knappers and horse shoers?Comment

You do realize Trump is a self-described "Tariff Man", yes? Who is that guy if not someone picking winners and losers in the economy? Trump therefore by your reasoning is a Socialist, and so is everyone who voted for him.You know you're debating a socialist when they start asking questions like that -- which are based on the assumptions the government should choose the winners and losers in the economy.

Be careful Vern, their reasoning ability is pretty weak at best. Just watch the "impeachment" fiasco and listen to the House "Managers" to see why confusion is rampant. "They" state there is plenty of evidence yet more is needed...makes no sense. You know you're debating a socialist when they start asking questions like that -- which are based on the assumptions the government should choose the winners and losers in the economy.

Are you trying to indicate the economy is not good now? That's not what I read...
As far as Supporting farmers. The government will keep the farming industry going as it is necessary for the national defense of the nation in order to feed the nation/army in case of war.Comment

But the most efficient way to do that is NOT to prevent mechanized, large scale agriculture, and instead subsidize 40-acre farms that use mules.
It sounds to me like our local liberals are advocating what Kenya and Zimbabwe did -- those nations were net food exporters, and now have to import food. And thanks to their crackpot, left wing economic policies, they can't afford that.Last edited by Vern Humphrey; 01-31-2020, 12:40.Comment
