Why can't we put Locusts on the extinct list ? ...

It seems odd that an insect that can and does cause famines that
in turn cause the deaths of millions of people on the African Continent
can't be either made extinct or even better genetically engineered
to be wingless. They look as though they are a good source of protein,
so farm them and make Locust Bread ?
Or at least squish the damn things before they take off.

The Department of Agriculture did a study and found female screw-worm flies mate only once. That winter, they bred billions of male screw-worm flies, sterilized them with radiation, and released them next breeding season, and that ended the problem.

I remember it well. We lived in Texas, my old man kept a bottle of purple medicine in the truck. Any animal; cow, dog, whatever that we came across with an infestation was caught and treated if we could catch it. The common fly's maggot would eat the infection around a wound, but the screw worm's maggot ate good flesh making the wound bigger. I'll never forget the sight of those worms boiling out of a wound when that medicine was poured in.

They were the devil to catch -- I independently invented the Hoolihan (a method of throwing a rope underhanded) so I could rope them in the brush.

The Wisconsin Historical Foundation has no record of the Golden Fleece Award being given fo screwworm research. The bulk of the screwworm research/application was conducted by Knipling and Bushland in the 1930’s through the 1950’s. The fleece wasn’t awarded until the 1970’s. It does continue that research in agriculture tends to be the brunt of jokes by citified members of the media. My office mate in grad school took a bit of “exposure”:for his work with early weaned pigs that was also the basis of development/nutrition of premature infants.
