    RIP, "Mad" Mike Hughes

Mike Hughes promoted himself as believing that the Earth was flat. He launched homemade rockets with the goal of eventually flying to the edge of space to see for himself.

A flat earth believer died when his steam-powered rocket crashed.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

I wonder if he had a GPS unit in that rocket. (As in: what keeps the GPS satellites in the sky if not geosynchronous orbits?)

Dude went out like Wiley Coyote. Not his first attempt either...

Dang. I saw a little interview he gave week or so ago. He was kind of a kook but likeable.

If he wanted to see the earth from 5,000 feet, what's wrong with a Cessna?

I find quite a bit of humor in this! The guy was a flat earther. Many flat earthers believe that the sky is actually a ceiling. So a guy that believes the sky is a ceiling set out to prove the Earth is flat by launching himself at the ceiling in a rocket. Not sure exactly how he saw this ending.
I dream of a better world. One where chickens may cross the road without their motives being questioned.

I think the flat earth stuff was just part of the act. He was a dare devil showman first.

The video I watched shows what sure looks to be a parachute that was jettisoned (launched? lost? fell out?) very early in the flight.
Perhaps he planned for the entire rocket to descend under that chute? Perhaps he planned to eject and parachute down?
