99% chance this is gang stuff, not random violence or a simple theft. when I read the header in the OP I thought it might be an initiation but after seeing it I agree more with the tentative premise of the article; retribution for a slight by the girl or someone she's close too to somebody in a gang hierarchy. If that's the case I guarantee she'll think twice before she smarts off to whichever outlaw she "dissed."

I obviously did not make myself clear to you. I was commenting on a possible motive and the reason behind it not morality. My hopefully unambiguous moral position - sadistic brutality by a criminal street gang for an offense that may be no more than a remark which may, or may not have been made by the victim, that someone takes as disrespectful is the worst kind of sociopathy and is not ok.
