local radio had an interview with a woman that runs a Chinese newspaper here in the states this morning,

her comments were that whenever there is a big mishap in China, the media and party blames it on the US,
medium sized mess up and Japan gets the blame,

and smaller dustups are usually blamed on Taiwan and talks of taking Taiwan back

she had some stats on Gov't orders for body bags, and amounts of folks creamated, but I cannot remember those numbers,

both were well above what China is saying, to the tune of 20x's more,

I think China, or rather the communist party, it trying to save face and keep people in line,

I don't think they will start any war or war type actions,

If there were piles of dead in China today, I would think some enterprising young tech savvy person would have got the cell phone video out, on the reasoning that human suffering, for some, outweighs a sense of national pride.

Two Chinese doctors tried to do just that. One is dead and the other has "disappeared." Human suffering does outweigh a sense of National Pride for some, but not the ever present all seeing monitoring of all activities, especially electronic activities by the ChiCom state police. The two Doctors in question were found out through their electronic communications.

It's the same reason, on a slightly more limited scale that an active resistance was so small in Nazi Germany. A state that had nothing like the surveillance capacity of the Chinese government. There was a little rhyme popular in Nazi Germany that went like this "God make me dumb so I do not to Dachau come."

While people disagree on the cause of the pandemic there is almost no one on the left or right who do not believe the Chinese government has not significantly lowered statistics just like they lied for weeks saying there was no real problem at all while promoting things like the "Hug a Chinese" program in Italy that directly led to a slow uptake on the problem leading significantly increasing the suffering..

I can imagine Russia, China (and the DPRK but who cares) fudging their numbers, but it only works to a point, because high or low case numbers/pandemic-concern will be reflected in other metrics such as economic activity.

And eventually the story comes out.

The citizens of China are terrified of their government as well they should be. Those who engage in political protest or do anything that differs from official Chinese Communist platforms often disappear and wind up in prison. Blood samples are taken upon entering prison and if a party official or rich foreigner needs an organ transplant the prisoners are executed or worse yet, vital organs are harvested from the prisoners while they are still alive.

Back in the mid 1990's I worked in China, managing a research project. I would travel there for several weeks at a time a couple of times a year. This was in Wuhan, no less. One time on a trip to Beijing, we visited Tiananmen Square, my Chinese colleagues would not talk to me or even acknowledge my presence. Later they told me they were afraid some government agent would hear or see them commenting on that site or what happened there.

The individuals that I worked with were warm and generous people. One of those individuals once told me that they didn't like the way they were forced to live, but what could they do?

I enjoyed the opportunity to make those visits, but I was always grateful to be back home in the USA where I didn't have to worry about finding myself in prison for having an "incorrect" thought or saying the wrong thing.

OMG... 21,000,000 cell phone numbers in China have been dropped...

The casualties in China is the millions....

Obama had 60 millions of Americans infected with the Swine flu and never did a single thing.

Never closed a single school, never proposed social distancing, never shut down travel, never did sheet.

And the Comminist left wing are saying Trump has done nothing.

                Lies, lies lies.

The left wing radicals want to turn the U.S. into a new world order where everybody (except the hierarchy lives in poverty.

Today, the Constitution of the United States is dead.

Reality check: drop of 21 million subscriptions against 1.6 billion, in the face of an economic downturn, is 1.3%. You think they lost 1/100 of their people in such a short stint without anyone finding out, in an era when everyone has satellites?

                  Crazy talk.

                      Time will tell.

To me the whole "blame China" thing is a pivot to distract from downplaying the seriousness of the virus in the first place.

humans have to have a reason things happen,

                        always have, likely always will,

Just normal to blame China as that is where it started....How is that downplaying the seriousness of the virus?

Old wisdom: there is a time to work the problem and a time to place blame.

I feel it myself as I think some bad calls were made at the outset in the US, and I could fill many posts with them. But the main thing now is to stay focused and work the problem, with as much cooperation as possible, but also good decisions.
