We're from the Government and we're here to help ...

If those words don't send a shiver down your spine, what will ?
There's something about Dr Fauci I don't like. I get the feeling
that all he really cares about is proving how clever he is in
these daily briefings. I don't think he gives a hoot about how
much damage is being caused by this virus as long as he looks
good. Trump's feeling that people need to get back to work,
which he was talked out of was right. Being retired, this shutdown
won't affect me, but how many medium to small businesses will
never re-open ? Maybe Trump needs some new advice from people
who can think of things other than this damn virus. The economy
for instance. It's kinda important and it's dying.

So you're saying that it's more important for everyone to get out there and spread the virus, including to the people who are doing the essential work, than to have a few bad quarters on the national books.

Do you know what makes it really hard to get a job after the pandemic? Being dead from it.

Added: There's the scene from the movie Das Boot, the Wolfgang Peterson film about a German WW2 U-boat, where they're stuck on the bottom and trying to effect some repairs. Only so much O2 to go around, and too much CO2 poisons the air for everyone. So....the people who have to work to fix leaks, batteries, bearings etc., do the work. The rest lay quiet in their bunks and stay out of the way (and use less air). A little like that now.

Togor nails it. Shut down is a temporary status change which can be reversed because everyone wants to get back to work. Dead is a permanent condition.
Hopefully Trump will go for some fundamental changes to the tax code which will get capital being invested here instead of 'there'.

We have approx 7,000 deaths out of population of 350,000,000.
Shutting the economy down for a year which is Dr Fauci's idea
will cripple the economy risking a decade's long depression.
i.e. the cure being worse than the disease.
We're not Lizards, we can do more than one thing at a time.

The Great Depression was caused by a lack of liquidity. People ran short on cash and foreclosures piled up like runs of dominos. Then capital was scarce to restart business. What finished getting the USA out of the Great Depression was a giant stimulus in the form of war production. So there are two pieces there: making sure people who need short term loans to keep their operations going have access to them, and keeping demand up so people running businesses have customers. They are connected.

Restarting an economy after a forced shutdown will probably move it on a different track than it was running before, but it isn't automatically the case that it will take 10 years to get up to speed, if good choices are made.

Dr. Fauci or Fausi ? is a spreader of doom. Kinda like the people who parade around wearing signs that says the world is ending. He has to stand on a box to reach the podium mcrophone, brags about his 50 years in infectious illnesses and offers no real solutions to the crisis at hand.
