Coronavirus Article of The Day - April 6, 2020

Get ready for a round of strange new respect for President George W. Bush. The man who is held personally responsible for the state and local failures of

It took a while to get a link on this that would work but finally....

Some stuff is left out of the article. Bush didn't just talk about it, he stockpiled supplies including ventilators and his administration game planned on a possibility like this. Over the years some of the supplies were used up for things and never were replaced. A lot of the other stuff was not rotated and deteriorated and when the time came the masks, for instance, had dry rotted.

Pandemic prep does give rise to the "standing army problem", and the sort of target that austerity advocates will get in their sights. Congress has a long history of legislative ADD, causing some programs to run on autopilot, and others to wither, depending on the appropriations language.

It's possible that Congress will yet learn and forget the lessons of Covid-19 in my lifetime.
